Liège: the fiery city
Liège, the cradle of European industrialization, is a vibrant city in eastern Belgium, rich in history, culture, and culinary delights. Picturesquely located along the Meuse River and surrounded by steep hills, Liège offers a multifaceted history that dates back to the Middle Ages, and a lively atmosphere that makes it an ideal destination for travelers seeking culture and authenticity, rather than polished, perfect places.
One of the city’s most striking landmarks is the impressive St. Paul’s Cathedral, dating back to the 10th century. Over the centuries, it has been expanded and remodeled multiple times, and its current Gothic style attracts visitors from around the world. Inside, you’ll find beautiful stained-glass windows and a magnificent treasury. Also worth visiting is the Prince-Bishops’ Palace on Place Saint-Lambert, which symbolizes the former power and significance of the bishops of Liège. This impressive example of Renaissance and Baroque architecture now houses the courthouse.
Another city landmark is the monumental staircase Montagne de Bueren. The 374 steep steps, lined with houses, lead to a viewpoint offering a fantastic panoramic view of the city. This staircase is a reminder of Liège’s defense in 1468 and is one of the most popular tourist attractions today.
Montagne de Bueren is not the only staircase in Liège. There are picturesque stairway districts, terrace parks, and viewpoints, especially along the long slope between Place Saint-Lambert and Place Saint-Léonard, all the way up to the former citadel.
A modern landmark is the train station in the Guillemins district, an overwhelming structure designed by Santiago Calatrava. Behind it is the Cointe Hill, dominated by the monumental buildings of Sacré Coeur and Notre Dame de Lourdes, as well as the Mémorial Interallié. Beyond that, there is a beautiful historic villa district.
The Meuse River, flowing through Liège, is ideal for recreational activities and gives the city a unique atmosphere. You can take boat trips or enjoy a leisurely walk along the riverside promenade, savoring the many cafés and restaurants. It comes alive especially on Sunday mornings when the weekly market La Batte takes place along the Meuse. It is Belgium’s largest and oldest market, and a perfect spot to discover local products, cheese, sausages, and fruit.
Liège is known for its museums, covering a broad range of art and history. The Grand Curtius Museum is a must for history enthusiasts. Located in a red Renaissance-style palace on the Meuse River, it showcases artifacts from prehistory, the Roman era, and the Middle Ages. Art lovers are drawn to the Museum of Fine Arts (La Boverie), which houses an impressive collection of European masterpieces from the Renaissance to modern art.
For music lovers, Liège is a special place, as it is the birthplace of César Franck, a famous composer. The city also has a thriving jazz scene and hosts the annual Mithra Jazz Festival, attracting jazz fans from around the world. Students are especially drawn to the old town district of Carré in the evenings.
Liège’s cuisine is a highlight for any gourmet. The city is particularly known for its waffles, which are different from the Brussels waffles: the Gaufre de Liège is sweeter and denser, with caramelized pieces that form during baking. Another traditional dish is the Liège Boulette, a delicious meatball in an onion and syrup sauce. It pairs perfectly with a glass of Liège beer, brewed in one of the many local breweries.
Liège is a charming city, at times rough and gritty, at others lovely and beautiful, with a rich heritage, a vibrant cultural scene, and unique culinary traditions. Whether strolling through the narrow alleys, exploring the historical buildings, or enjoying the culinary specialties, Liège offers an authentic experience that captivates many visitors.
